*Please Note*
Tagua and acai are natural products, hand dyed and crafted by local artisans so the exact necklace you receive may not be the same shape and color as the item pictured. However, your necklace will be as close as possible to what is pictured. We do our very best to provide you with as similar an item as the one that you see. As always, if you don't like your item, return it in like-new condition within 2 weeks for a complete refund.
We travel once a year to Ecuador to visit our friends, Olga and Cesar in their workshop. They are able to provide meaningful employment to many women in the community where they work to process, dye, and polish the nuts and seeds, then turn them into exquisite artisan jewelry. We actually pay them more than they ordinarily receive from the broker but we know that our business helps support the community.
Tagua palm trees grow in the higher elevations along the Pacific coast and in the cloud forests of Ecuador. They aren't cultivated per se, rather growing in semi-domesticated groves. Because you have to have tagua palms to have tagua trees, as long as there is a market, the best economic use of the land is to leave the trees alone and not cut them down to grow corn or raise cattle.
The tagua palms are stout, darkly green palms, growing about 10-20 ft high. Often the trunks will be at an angle because the tapers (an animal that looks like a hairy pig with an elephant trunk, I'm not kidding) bang on the trees repeatedly to force the nuts to fall off. Tagua nuts are favored by tapers for food. It's always a race to see who can get the nuts first- the tapers or the people, lol!
Acai is also a palm. It grows in the Ecuadorian Amazon and like tagua is a sustainably harvested crop from the forest. The fruit grows in large clusters, like dates, with a a single pit inside each drop.
Thanks for your interest in our Tagua and Acai jewelry. Your purchase helps preserve vulnerable tropical forests. Be sure to look at our other Tagua and Acai offerings in our EBAY shop. Chances are, you might just find a bracelet and/or earrings to match.
