    Description

It would be nearly impossible to find another 1851 plate this early. It has probably never been cleaned. The silver wreath, the silver covering the eagle's neck, head, ribbon, and stars are a uniform grey. The remaining gilt finish is about 80-90%. The reverse has the small tongue with a small amount of gilt finish, indicating both sides of the plate were probably finished in gilt. The plate is tight with nothing loose. The eagle is sharp with no signs of ware indicating that it may never have been worn.
With all of the connections, museum contacts, collectors, and photo sources, O'Donnell has only one photo of this plate in his book; and the wreath is missing.
This is the earliest and the rarest 1851 plate ever put up for sale and the condition will make it stand out in any collection.
